Located at the crest of the Mahabharat Range overlooking the valley of the Kali Gandaki river, Tansen city is a magnificent hill station of Palpa district. The picturesque town of Tansen is the administrative centre of Palpa and is situated in an elevation of 250m to 2000m. Tansen is an undiscovered gem of western Nepal. Now, Tansen is the center of  Newari culture and tradition. With their unique traditional wood carving skills, they have decorated the streets and temples making them more beautiful. Tansen is famous for the traditional colorful woven Dhaka fabric i.e ‘Palpali Dhaka topi’.

Centuries ago, Newar businessmen from Kathmandu arrived in Tansen to trade, bringing with them their art and architecture. However, the district was home to the Magar people. The name of the city, ‘Tansen’ is also given from the Magar  language, meaning "northern settlement." From being ruled by the famous Sen Dynasty to being one of the major targets of Maoists during the Nepal Civil War, Tansen has rich ancient history and culture. The Medieval Town of Tansen was also recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008.

Getting There

Tansen is well connected by roadways, but the airways have not been developed yet. However, you can take a flight to Bhairahawa or Pokhara and from there you can travel by road to reach Tansen. It can take about 5 hours from Pokhara and one hour from Bhairawa.

There are regular buses travelling from Kathmandu. There are two ways to reach Tansen- 324km from Kathmandu via Pokhara and 296km from Kathmandu via Bhairahawa
