Gurdwara Guru Nanak Satsang in Kupandol, Lalitpur, is the spiritual and cultural center for Nepal's Sikh community, promoting Guru Nanak’s teachings through daily prayers, community service, and interfaith harmony. Established in 1976, it continues to serve as a beacon of Sikh values and unity in Kathmandu Valley.

Nestled in the heart of Kupandol, Lalitpur, Gurdwara Guru Nanak Satsang is more than just a place of worship—it's the spiritual nucleus of Nepal’s small yet deeply rooted Sikh community. Revered for its rich history, active congregation, and commitment to Guru Nanak’s universal teachings, this Gurdwara stands as a symbol of interfaith harmony, resilience, and service in the Himalayan nation.

Historical Significance: From Refuge to Reverence

The legacy of Sikhism in Nepal dates back to the mid-19th century, when Maharani Jind Kaur, the last queen of the Sikh Empire and mother of Maharaja Duleep Singh, fled British persecution and sought asylum in Kathmandu. Her arrival marked the beginning of organized Sikh presence in Nepal. She is credited with founding early Sikh shrines, installing handwritten copies of the Guru Granth Sahib, and maintaining religious observance during her exile.

However, the modern Sikh congregation in Nepal was significantly shaped in the 20th century. Seeing the need for a formal spiritual center, he led the initiative to establish Gurdwara Guru Nanak Satsang in 1976. It became the central point for religious gatherings, festivals, and community service for Sikhs and admirers of Guru Nanak's teachings.

Architectural Layout and Spiritual Ambience

The Gurdwara, set against the backdrop of the Kathmandu Valley hills, features:

A large prayer hall where the Guru Granth Sahib is placed with great reverence. Daily hukamnama (scripture reading) and kirtan (devotional singing) are conducted here.

A Langar Hall offering free vegetarian meals on Saturdays and special occasions, welcoming all visitors regardless of faith or background.

A Yatri Niwas (guest house) that hosts visiting devotees and pilgrims, especially during Gurpurabs and religious tours.

A library and spiritual learning space, used for teaching Punjabi, Gurmukhi, and Sikh history to the younger generation.

The serene atmosphere, combined with the fragrance of Prasad (holy sweet offering) and the sound of hymns, makes the Gurdwara not only a place for prayer but also for reflection and learning.

Interfaith Harmony and Social Integration

Gurdwara Guru Nanak Satsang is notable for its inclusive approach. Non-Sikhs often attend the Langar, festivals, and spiritual events. The Gurdwara's commitment to universal brotherhood resonates with Nepal’s pluralistic society. Local Nepalese, tourists, Hindus, Buddhists, Christians, and even foreigners are welcomed with warmth and offered the same respect.
