Bishnudwar: The Trail That Keeps Calling Me Back

24, Apr 2025 | nepaltraveller.com

Each time I hike to Bishnudwar, I momentarily lose my way in its look-alike paths, but through that confusion, I always find myself reconnecting with nature and gaining a deeper understanding of who I am.

I never say no to a hike. There's something about hiking that makes me feel alive in ways nothing else quite can, ways I can barely explain. Of all the trails I’ve walked, Bishnudwar holds a special place in my heart. I’ve been there more than five times, and yet, the thirst remains unquenched. Despite revisiting the same destination, each journey has felt uniquely different, offering a new story every time.

The walk begins at the entrance of Shivapuri National Park and continues through dense woods and along quiet mini springs. The chirping of birds and the hum of insects turn what could be a strenuous walk into something meditative and rejuvenating. I’ve done this hike with a single companion and also with a bunch of friends, and each dynamic has offered a different experience, a different energy. But one thing has remained constant which is the feeling of getting lost, only to find myself again in the heart of nature.

As you near the destination, the trail splits into several paths that look almost identical, making it easy to second-guess your way. Yet somehow, after wandering for a bit, the right path reveals itself. And then, almost suddenly, the sight appears tiny sacred stones and the carved frames of Lord Vishnu nestled in nature’s quiet sanctum.

Colourful prayer flags flutter in the breeze, adding a sense of vibrancy to the solemnity. What draws me most to Bishnudwar is not just the spiritual air but the natural arrangement the large stones scattered around the stream, the way water flows through the nooks and crannies of rock. The level of water changes with the seasons i.e. sometimes dry, sometimes overflowing. I find myself torn between fear and fascination when I step near the water, but the serenity it brings is incomparable.

The entire environment of Bishnudwar feels otherworldly, as if the world has turned entirely green and forgotten all other colours. That’s where I discovered my favourite colour i.e. green. It’s not just soothing to the eyes but healing to the heart. When that green mingles with the sound of a flowing stream, it becomes a perfect, unforgettable moment.

Reaching the destination is never the only goal; the journey itself holds its own magic. And I can’t say it enough, Bishnudwar is a whole different vibe. Whether alone or with a group, it’s always worth the trip. And given the chance, I’d go back in a heartbeat.
