Tangting is a traditional Gurung village located approximately 21 km northeast of Pokhara, perched above the Madi River Valley at an elevation of around 1,650 metres. This off-the-beaten-path village lies in the shadow of Mt. Annapurna and Machhapuchhre, offering some of the most striking mountain views in central Nepal.
Known for its unspoilt natural beauty, warm hospitality, and strong community spirit, Tangting is an ideal destination for travellers looking to immerse themselves in local culture, trek light trails, or simply escape the pace of urban life.
As a city-born undergraduate student, visiting Tangting was a refreshing and grounding experience. The 3-day trip allowed me to slow down, connect deeply with nature, and interact with kind-hearted locals. From homemade meals and mountain sunrises to school visits and cultural exchanges, every moment in Tangting felt authentic and soul-enriching.
Our trip began with a scenic 12-hour drive from Kathmandu. We passed through the Prithvi Highway, stopping for a meal at Malekhu before winding through hills lined with orange groves, rivers, and waterfalls. Upon reaching Tangting, we were greeted by the serene silence of the hills and the smiles of our homestay hosts.
Dinner featured comforting dal bhat, flavourful chicken curry, and a special serving of Kodoko Dhido - a nutritious finger millet dish - accompanied by gundruk soup and spicy achaar. The cool evening under the stars was the perfect welcome.
The day began with a sunrise walk around the village. The view of Machhapuchhre and Annapurna drenched in golden morning light was unforgettable. We explored the quiet stone paths and then joined a gathering with the village women's group, learning about daily life, cooperation, and culture.
The evening was spent around a lively campfire with traditional music and dance - a joyful moment of connection with the locals.
We visited the local school on our final day. Though small, the classrooms buzzed with curiosity and excitement. The children taught us a few words in their mother tongue, Gurung, while I shared phrases in Nepal Bhasha, my own. The heartfelt interaction with the teachers and students became a highlight of the trip.
After lunch, we departed for Pokhara, our hearts full with memories of kindness and calm.
Tangting is more than a destination - it’s a soulful retreat. Whether you're travelling with friends or journeying solo, the village offers timeless views, grounded living, and deep cultural encounters. A visit here doesn't just change your surroundings - it changes your rhythm of life.
