Hidden among the remote Himalayas of Mugu, Chhayanath Dham is one of Karnali Province’s revered Hindu pilgrimage destinations, where ancient legends, devotion to Lord Shiva and breathtaking mountain landscapes come together.

High in the mountains of western Nepal lies a sacred destination where faith inspires pilgrims to cross difficult Himalayan trails. Chhayanath Dham, located in Mugu District of Karnali Province, is a revered pilgrimage site dedicated to Lord Shiva, locally worshipped as Chhayanath Thakur. Situated at an altitude of over 4,000 metres, this remote shrine attracts devotees seeking spiritual blessings, purification and a deeper connection with Hindu traditions.

Religious Significance of Chhayanath Dham

According to Hindu religious tradition associated with the Swasthani Bratakatha, Lord Shiva wandered the world carrying the lifeless body of his beloved wife, Sati Devi. As parts of her body fell at different locations, those places became sacred Shakti Peethas.

Local belief holds that Sati Devi's final remains fell at Chhayanath, making the site especially significant to devotees of Shiva and Shakti. Pilgrims believe that visiting this holy destination, offering prayers and bathing in sacred waters can help cleanse sins and bring spiritual blessings.

The surrounding Himalayan landscape also contains natural caves associated with the worship of Shiva, Parvati and Vishnu, adding to the area's religious importance.

One of the most important religious occasions at Chhayanath Dham is the annual pilgrimage during Janai Purnima.

Every year, on Shrawan Shukla Ashtami, priests and devotees ceremoniously carry the idol of Chhayanath Thakur from the temple at Chaingaun towards the remote Himalayan shrine. The procession is accompanied by traditional musicians and worshippers.

During the pilgrimage, devotees from Mugu, Jumla, Humla, Dolpa, Kalikot and neighbouring districts gather to perform religious rituals, including Shraddha, Yagya and Bratabandha. Traditional spiritual practitioners, known as Dhamis and Jhankris, also participate in the celebrations.

The sacred idol remains at the high-altitude shrine during the festival before returning to Chaingaun.

Chhayanath Temple: Preserving Centuries of Faith

The historic Chhayanath Temple in Chaingaun, approximately a 15-minute walk from Gamgadhi, serves as the principal location for safeguarding the deity's idols and sacred belongings.

Originally constructed around 1762, the stone-and-mud temple underwent renovation after nearly 260 years. The restoration incorporated traditional stonework, wooden craftsmanship and metal decorations, helping preserve an important part of Mugu's religious heritage.
