As an adventure seeker always on the lookout for unique experiences, I set my sights on the Makalu Base Camp Trek, one of Nepal's most thrilling and underrated trekking routes. Nestled amidst the serene Himalayas, this trek promised solitude and a chance to explore the lesser-known paths of Nepal. Here's mine incredible 20-day journey, where I discovered the hidden gems of the Makalu region, immersed myself in the Himalayan culture, and marveled at breathtaking mountain vistas.
Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu
With anticipation and excitement in my heart, I landed at Tribhuvan International Airport. Welcomed by the vibrant energy of Kathmandu, I was whisked away to a comfortable 4-star hotel, my base for the beginning of this grand adventure.
Day 02: Exploring Kathmandu's Cultural Riches
Before setting foot on the trail, I dedicated a day to immersing myself in the cultural wonders of Kathmandu. Accompanied by a knowledgeable guide and our private van, I embarked on a full-day guided sightseeing tour. From the sacred Swayambhunath stupa, known as the Monkey Temple, to the revered Pashupatinath Hindu temple and the awe-inspiring Boudhanath stupa, the rich heritage of the city unfolded before my eyes.
Day 03: From Kathmandu to Tumlingtar and Num
The real adventure began as I boarded an early morning flight to Tumlingtar, embracing a bird's-eye view of Nepal's magnificent landscapes. After a short rest, we embarked on a scenic drive to the village of Num, where the Makalu Base Camp Trek truly commenced. Surrounded by lush greenery, I caught a glimpse of the mighty Himalayas, setting the tone for the days to come.

As the days unfolded, I ventured into the heart of the Makalu region, trekking through dense forests of juniper and rhododendron. The trail took me to remote villages, allowing me to witness the Tibetan and Sherpa communities' way of life amidst the tranquil Himalayan surroundings. Crossing rivers and ascending steep trails, I trekked through Makalu Barun National Park, home to diverse flora and fauna.
Each day brought new challenges and rewards. From Khongma Danda to the awe-inspiring Makalu Base Camp at 4,870 meters, I pushed my limits and soaked in the panoramic views of majestic peaks, including Mt. Everest, Mt. Makalu, and Mt. Kanchenjunga. The rugged terrain, alpine lakes, and glacial wonders left me in awe, reminding me of the raw power and beauty of nature.
