Budhanilkantha offers visitors a unique blend of sacred Hindu and Buddhist sites, forested hiking trails and authentic local life, all set at the foothills of Shivapuri just north of Kathmandu.

Budhanilkantha is a town located on the northern edge of the Kathmandu Valley, at the foothills of the Shivapuri range. Best known for its important religious site and close proximity to protected forest areas, it offers visitors a peaceful environment while remaining within easy reach of central Kathmandu. The area is well suited to tourists interested in culture, spirituality, nature and gentle outdoor activities.

Visit Budhanilkantha Temple

Budhanilkantha Temple is the most significant attraction in the area. It is home to a large reclining statue of Lord Vishnu, also known as Jal Narayan. The statue lies in the centre of a rectangular stone pond and depicts Vishnu resting on the cosmic serpent Ananta Shesha. Carved from a single block of black basalt stone and measuring approximately five metres in length, it is considered one of the largest stone carvings of its kind in Nepal. The temple is an active place of worship, and visitors are advised to dress modestly and be respectful of local religious practices.

Explore Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park

Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park borders Budhanilkantha to the north and is one of the most important natural areas surrounding Kathmandu. The park protects forest ecosystems that include oak, pine and rhododendron, as well as a wide variety of bird species and wildlife. Several well-established hiking routes begin near Budhanilkantha, making it a popular starting point for day hikes and longer treks.

Popular destinations within the park include Shivapuri Peak, which offers panoramic views of the Kathmandu Valley on clear days, and Baghdwar, traditionally recognised as the source of the Bagmati River. Entry permits are required for the national park and can be obtained at designated entry points.

Hike to Nagi Gompa

Nagi Gompa is a Buddhist monastery situated on a forested hillside above Budhanilkantha. The trail to the monastery passes through quiet woodland and rural areas and can be completed as a half-day hike. Nagi Gompa is primarily a nunnery and is known for its calm atmosphere. Visitors are welcome to explore the surroundings quietly and enjoy views across the valley, provided they respect the monastery’s rules and peaceful setting.

Visit Kopan Monastery

Kopan Monastery is located a short drive from Budhanilkantha and is one of Nepal’s most well-known centres for Tibetan Buddhist study and meditation. The monastery attracts visitors from around the world and regularly offers courses and retreats for international participants. Even outside of organised programmes, visitors can walk around the grounds, enjoy the landscaped gardens and gain insight into monastic life.

Enjoy Local Food and Cafés

Budhanilkantha offers a range of local eateries and cafés serving traditional Nepali food as well as some international options. Popular local dishes include dal bhat, momo and Newari specialities. Small cafés in the area provide convenient places to rest after temple visits or hikes, and dining locally supports small businesses and the surrounding community.

Experience Village Walks and Local Life

Beyond the main road, Budhanilkantha is surrounded by residential neighbourhoods and traditional villages. Walking through these areas allows visitors to observe everyday life, local farming practices and small neighbourhood temples. Early mornings and late afternoons are particularly suitable times for these walks, when the area is quieter and the light is softer.

Take Day Trips to Nearby Areas

Budhanilkantha is a convenient base for short excursions to nearby destinations. Tokha, located to the west, is an old Newari settlement known for its historic houses and cultural traditions. Sundarijal, located to the east, is another entry point to Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park and is known for its waterworks, forest trails and hiking routes. These destinations can easily be visited as half-day or full-day trips.

Budhanilkantha offers visitors a balanced experience that combines religious heritage, natural surroundings and access to local culture. Its location near Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park and its calm atmosphere make it an appealing destination for tourists seeking a quieter alternative to central Kathmandu while still remaining close to the city’s main attractions.
