Ama Yangri, a hidden gem near Kathmandu, offers stunning mountain views, cultural immersion, and a serene escape for trekkers on a short budget

Ama Yangri is a hidden gem located in the Helambu region of Sindhupalchowk district that offers a perfect mix of adventure, natural richness and spiritual serenity for national and international tourists.  At an elevation of 3,771 meters, locals and tourists visit Ama Yangri to soak in its unspoiled beauty and tranquility.

Furthermore, it is one of the shortest and easiest destinations for trekkers and travelers to enjoy 360 degree views of mountains along with the cultural and religious value of Ama Yangri temple. Likewise, Ama Yangri is one of the highest peaks around Kathmandu Valley. You can admire the stunning view of Langtang Range, the Annapurna, Manaslu, and even Everest from the peak.

In today’s world where people like traveling but are limited by time and money, Ama Yangri is the ideal destination. It is a perfect spot for a brief 1 to 2 days getaway from your hectic routine, offering opportunities for trekking adventures and enjoying mountain views and AmaYangri stupa on the top.

As a student with limited time and money for travel, I found Ama Yangri as the best destination for short traveling and gateways.  My journey began as a field trip from Kathmandu to Melemchi and then to Ama Yangri. Melemchi marks the starting point of the trek. The route took me through lush green valleys, traditional villages, and terraced farmlands, providing a glimpse into the rich cultural tapestry of the region. After reaching Melamchi, we set off on foot, heading towards Tarkeghyang, a traditional village renowned for its ancient monasteries and warm hospitality.

The trek from Tarkeghyang to Ama Yangri is a moderately challenging hike, weaving through dense forests of rhododendron and pine. Along the way, the rhythmic sounds of chirping birds and rustling leaves created a serene atmosphere, making the journey as delightful as the destination. As I went higher, the air grew crisper, and the landscape opened up to reveal stunning views of the surrounding valleys and peaks.

As a  girl who was born and brought up in the Kathmandu valley, I thought Ama Yangri to be a heaven on Earth with all of its magnificent scenery. The trek path took me by its breathtaking waterfalls in the middle of the road, the beautiful traditional villages of Sherpa, Tamang and Chhetri communities. Furthermore, I took a lot of photographs and spoke with local people. At first I was enjoying every second of the hike, later I got a little nauseous and found it challenging to climb as the altitude was increasing.

However, I did not give up and continued to climb. Once I reached the top, every struggle felt worth the sweat. I was greeted by the mesmerizing views of the Himalayas all around and the Ama Yangri temple at the top.

Ama Yangri stupa is well known as the protector of Helambu valley. The stupa was surrounded by prayers flags which added to the charm of the place whereas the wind and sound played as a paid performer for the viewers. Sitting there and admiring the view of the mountains, I felt a sense of peace and connection with nature.

Ama Yangri is more than a trek, it is an immersive experience of natural and cultural heritage. It is a destination that promises to leave an indelible mark on the soul of those seeking a blend of adventure, tranquility, and spirituality near the valley to adjust in their busy schedule.
