Ang Tshiring Sherpa: A Visionary Leader

1, Mar 2019 | nepaltraveller.com

Respected for his sharp insights and extreme passion for mountaineering, Ang Tshiring Sherpa has been a driving force in shaping Nepal’s tourism

Owner of Yeti Airlines,  Air Dynasty and the man behind many ventures, Ang Tshiring Sherpa died in a helicopter crash on Wednesday, February 27. Born in a village called Khumjung in Solukhumbu, he was a boy helping his father ascend peaks, including Mount Everest, who went on to become a pioneer in the aviation industry and one of the biggest hospitality entrepreneurs Nepal has seen.

Growing up in the shadows of Everest, it was absolute for him to devote his entire work and profession to the mountains. But little was it known that his life would end in the lap of Himalayas itself.  Ang Tshiring Sherpa, accompanied by Rabindra Adhikari, Hon. Minister of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation and five others including the pilot, was onboard an Air Dynasty helicopter that crashed in Pathibhara, Taplejung, at around 1:30 pm on February 27.
The helicopter that was carrying Ang and others, belonged to Air Dynasty Heli Service, one which Ang Tshiring founded himself in 1993. Air Dynasty was one of many ventures that established Sherpa and his brothers as the biggest names in Nepal’s aviation and hospitality industry.
In the early 90’s, Ang Tshiring joined his elder brother Sonam’s adventure travel company Thamserku, which was reliant on the state-run Royal Nepal Airlines that had most connectivity but limited air flights. Ang Tshiring and his brother realised that they had to venture in, so they started Yeti Airlines. With no doubt, they became well known in Nepal's early, however developing '90s travel industry. With its sister airline Tara Air, the two airlines today, together direct the largest network of flights throughout the country. More than 30 years after the advent of a travel company, this family business has now grown to become one of the valued names in Nepal’s travel and hospitality industry, with luxurious resorts and expedition companies throughout the country.
Those who worked with Ang Tshering recall him as being industrious who worked resolutely for his company as well as stood by the aviation industry in the midst of emergencies. People have been mourning the untimely demise of one of the most influential personalities in the country. It was a huge shock for the entire tourism enterprise and a massive potential loss to the industry. Ang Tshiring Sherpa might not be here today with us, but his legacy will continue to live on and be remembered. He has left his imprint that shall never be erased and remain still like the majestic mountains, from where his journey began.
Heartfelt condolences to his family and close ones.
