KATHMANDU
The Chandravinayak and Shri Bhairavnath Jatra, which has been going on every year for about three hundred and fifty years, has been postponed this year due to the coronavirus epidemic. Navin Gorkhali, the coordinator of the Jatra Coordinating Committee, informed that the rituals inside the temple, including the puja from Amalkot, will be completed. There is a tradition that the procession starts after a special pooja at the Chandravinayak temple on the first day by Pashupatinath Amalkot Court.
Every year from Kartik Shukla Purnima to Margashirsha Krishna Tritiya, Chandravinayak Jatra is celebrated for four days in Pashupati, Jayavageshwari, Mitra Park, Chavahil and Chuchchepati areas. It is believed that King Bhupalendra Malla started this procession in the year 801 BC. On the first day of the procession, there is a tradition of worshiping 'Malja Nakegu' i.e. Kumar Kumari and feeding Vinayak's offerings. Chandravinayak is one of the four Vinayakas of the valley. There is even a religious belief that Chandra Vinayak is the son of Pashupatinath.
On the evening of the full moon, a ritual will be performed in the temple premises. Pashupatinath Amalkot Court has a tradition of providing firewood to wake up the noise. On the morning of Krishna Pratipada, the top of the road, the khat of Shri Chandra Vinayak and Shri Bhairavnath is raised.
On the second day of the procession, Ganesh is offered 'halamali' i.e. maize, wheat, soybean, sakharkhand, pindalu, laddu, peda and lava. These offerings are distributed as offerings to pilgrims and devotees in the evening. Similarly, on the second day, the chariots of Shri Chandra Vinayak and Shri Bhairavnath are rotated around the temple and taken to Gangahiti for bathing. After bathing, both the beds are taken to Charumati Bihar in the evening.
On the day of Krishna Dwitiya at the top of the road, both the chariots are taken to Pashupati to pay obeisance to the father. In the evening, Charumati Bahalmai Rath Nachai Tasi or Bimiro Prasad is distributed.
On the morning of Krishna Tritiya, the procession ends at the Amalkot Court after offering to Shri Chandra Vinayak and Shri Bhairavnath. To celebrate the successful completion of the four-day Jatra, Sindur Jatra is performed in the Chavahil area throughout the day on the third day. The Chandra Vinayak temple has been closed since April last year due to Corona. Reconstruction of the temple damaged by the earthquake on April 29, 2072 BS has reached the final stage. Chairman of Kathmandu Metropolitan City-7 Shuddha Kumar Dangol informed that the reconstruction of the temple will be completed in a month. It is said that preparations have been made to open the temple by maintaining physical distance and adopting health protection method after the completion of the reconstruction.
