World Soil Day is celebrated every year on 5th December to raise public awareness about the importance of healthy soil and advocate for sustainable management of soil fertility.
In December 2013, the United Nations General Assembly declared December 5, 2014 as the first official World Soil Day.
Nepal has been celebrating World Soil Day since 2072. In this context, Nepal is also celebrating the 9th World Soil Day today on November 19 to give meaning to the slogan 'Starting food production with healthy soil'.
Soil is at the center of agricultural activities, food security, nutrition security and climate protection.
At present, the physical, chemical and biological properties of the soil are deteriorating, and the fertility of the soil is increasing day by day, including in Nepal. Therefore, this problem has started to be considered as a common problem of the world and to address it by unity at the global level, World Soil Day is celebrated with the main goal of increasing public awareness.
To celebrate this year's World Soil Day at the national level, the Department of Agriculture, Central Agricultural Laboratory, National Soil Science Research Center (NARC), Food and Nutrition Security Improvement Project, Rural Enterprise and Economic Development Project, United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization and Nepalese Society of Soil Science have joined forces across the country. Various programs are being organized in coordination.
According to the Department of Agriculture, “The World Soil Day program will help to increase public awareness to increase fertility by informing people about the importance of soil and protecting it properly.”
Dr. Revathiraman Poudel, Director General of the department said, “Without soil conservation, development and management, the debate on food and nutrition security, sustainable agricultural development, biological diversity conservation, organic agriculture and other topics will not be meaningful.” _RSS
