Looking up at the sky and waving to airplanes whenever they pass by has been a reflex action of many children. And while growing up, flying in it, greeting air hostesses, meeting pilots, or taking a picture in front of the craft is another craze for people who rarely take flights. With this, imagine being able to see and touch an actual aircraft right in front of you, roam and wander inside for long as you want, and that too without an expensive flight ticket. Well yes, you get to click pictures with air hostesses and pilots too. And you need not worry about motion sickness, it won’t fly or go anywhere! First Aviation Museum in Kathmandu has been launched by joint cooperation of Civil Aviation Authority and Bed Uprety Trust (trust of Captain Bed Uprety).

“Good afternoon everyone. This is your captain speaking. First of all, I’d like to welcome everyone on Airbus 330-300. You need not take your seat and fasten your seatbelt. Please roam around freely and enjoy your visit to the Aviation Museum, Kathmandu.”

Inside the craft, there are more than 350 miniature models of aircraft from fighter planes to the ones used for commercial purposes. And a real-life Ecureil Helicopter is also stationed in the museum arena. There are also placed beautiful pictures from up above forming a separate set of an aerial photo gallery. The main attraction of the museum is the original cockpit setting where the visitors can enter and even take a seat.

It was publicly launched on 29 November 2017. And it has become a major attraction for students in schools and high schools as a part of their field visit or even an excursion. A video documentary is also broadcasted at regular intervals each day. The documentary is specially focused on students aspiring to work in aviation careers. According to Captain Upreti, the main objective of the project is to arouse interest among young Nepalese about aviation and to inspire them to take up careers in one of the world’s fastest-growing sectors.

The total project is about NPRs 70 million. And it is Nepal’s second aviation museum after the one established in Dhangadi in Western Nepal by Captain Upreti himself. The one in Kathmandu is situated in Sinamangal. It is open from 10 a.m. onwards till 6 p.m. in summer and till 5 p.m. in winter. They have their own website where you can visit for further information on entrance tickets.
