Just 13 km east of Kathmandu, Bhaktapur Durbar Square has a platter of jaw-dropping attractions. Built in the 1700s during the Malla dynasty, this extremely lavish place has even earned its name on UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites. From the Palace of Fifty-five Windows to the incredibly ornate Golden Gate, this is one place you shouldn’t miss out on.
When you’re weary from walking in the hot sun, be sure to stop by and try out Juju Dhau. The literal name of Juju Dhau is “King of Yogurt” in Newari language and it surely doesn’t disappoint. Made from fresh buffalo milk, the savoury creamy dessert is served in a small clay pot and will definitely leave you refreshed and energized to continue on your journey.
While the blazing sun might be troublesome for many, it is the exact opposite in Pottery Square. Amidst the scattered temples and cultural monuments, lies Bhaktapur Pottery Square. Here, each pot is handmade and traditionally spun and then set out to dry in the sun. When in Pottery Square, you’ll find hard-working individuals placed proudly beside their works of art, hoping a passerby will buy one of their pots. The rows of identically made red pots, sitting in perfect disorder is an aesthetic sight for everyone and quite tempting to buy for little ones as a “Nepali Piggy Bank”.
For those who love history or ancient art, another place to put on your list of destinations is the National Art Gallery. Located on the western end of the 55 Window Palace, the National Art Gallery displays beautifully detailed manuscripts, paintings and stone art; some even dating back to the 12th century.
The enchanting works of art available in the Bhaktapur Durbar area depict the life of Lord Buddha and serve as attractive pieces on any wall and are also great for a souvenir to both art lovers and followers of Buddhism.
