Warsaw (AP) — Under a contract signed in Warsaw on Tuesday, France will give Poland two observation satellites and a receiving station, which Poland claims would assist its military forces identify threats earlier.
Following a meeting with his French counterpart Sébastien Lecornu, Polish Defense Minister Mariusz Baszczak declared that he and Lecornu had approved a contract between Airbus and the Polish Armament Agency to provide the Polish army with two reconnaissance satellites.
"A good opportunity to increase our capacity for the early detection of dangers," Baszczak said of the arrangement.
The Polish Armament Agency estimated the deal's total value at 575 million euros ($612 million), and it predicted that the satellites will be launched into orbit by 2027.
According to the Polish Defense Ministry, the satellites will enable its military to acquire reconnaissance data with a 30 centimeter accuracy (nearly a foot).
Bászczak referred to it as an early warning system for both military and civilian threats, like as natural disasters.
