LONDON — The year when war returned to Europe affected almost every aspect of life. Millions of Ukrainians suffered as a result of Russia's invasion of its neighboring country, which also broke Europe's sense of security, tore up the geopolitical map, and shook the world economy. The shockwaves increased the cost of living in houses across Europe, exacerbated the world's migrant crisis, and hindered efforts to address climate change.
"What have we heard recently? There are more than just rocket blasts, combat, and aircraft roar. It sounds like a new Iron Curtain is falling and cutting off Russia from the developed world", said Volodymyr Zelenskyy, president of Ukraine, on February 24.
The world was stunned and the calm in Europe was shattered by Russia's dawn onslaught on February 24. The war also defied the almost general belief that Russian forces would win the conflict soon. Russian troops encountered ferocious opposition from Ukraine, which delayed their advance toward their capital. In April, Russia withdrew from the region surrounding Kiev, leaving behind hundreds of dead bodies, traumatized civilians, and destroyed structures that Ukraine and its allies claim are proof of war crimes.
Fightings also broke out in the east and south of Ukraine, as Russia drove back from a region that had been occupied by pro-Moscow forces since 2014. After a terrible three-month siege that left the city in ruins, the port of Mariupol was overrun.
