The Melamchi Water Supply Development Committee has proceeded with necessary improvements and preparations to bring water to the valley within this month.

Only general improvement work has to be done to bring water. It is mentioned that after the tunnel is opened, general inspection will be done every year and repairs may be required every five to five years.Accordingly, it has now been inspected and found to require general improvement, so it has been started.

Earlier, the Asian Development Bank had given its preliminary report to the committee on the study of long-term maintenance of the project. The repair and improvement work can be carried out in a planned manner only after the final report is received by December. Based on the final report, a plan will be made on how to do it.

Water was brought to Kathmandu for the first time in February 2077 from the project that started construction two decades ago. A few months after the water diversion, i.e. on 1st June 2078, the rains caused great damage to the project. Two employees of the project died during the project inspection.

In the same year, the rains in October caused further damage to the project. The government temporarily diverted the water last May by constructing an access road. Water has been brought to the valley for almost two months, but the rain stopped bringing water before that to prevent further damage.

After a long wait of the people of Kathmandu Valley, the distribution of Melamchi water has started, but it is still not possible to distribute it for twelve months. In June 2077, floods and landslides occurred in the upper part of the project, and there was a big impact in that area. There is a situation where a permanent solution can be started only after the completion of the geological study.

The total work of the project is divided into three parts namely headwork, tunnel, and processing center. Out of this, the construction of the headwork and the tunnel was done by one company, and the construction of the processing center by two companies. The tunnel and water treatment plant have been completed. The 'head work' was not completed and the flood caused damage.

The government formed the Melamchi Water Supply Development Committee in 2056. ADB signed an agreement in 2001 for the construction of the project. Almost five months after the withdrawal of the Italian company CMC, the Chinese company Sino Hydro started the rest of the construction work. For two years, the construction was interrupted by Covid-19, while the rains damaged the already-built structures.

“Some of the project's structures, roads, and bridges leading to the project will be repaired immediately and water will be brought. Until a permanent solution is found, it is necessary to stop bringing water in the rain and repair it in the winter. Water redistribution started last May but stopped in June. This year, due to less damage to the project, we will be able to bring water sooner than last year.” Said Rajendra Prasad Pant, spokesman of the committee

“There is no need to clean the tunnel and if the road reaches the headwork, water can be brought quickly. Last year, the rain caused major damage to the project, roads, and bridges leading to the project. Comparatively, it is estimated that less damage has been done to the structure this year. The water can be diverted soon by cleaning Gate No. 1.” Said Spokesman Pant.

“Although it is assumed that there is no need to clean the structures there, the condition of the structures will be known after reaching there. Last year, a road was built on the side of the river with a dozer, but the flood washed it away. Now, an access road will be built from near the river, albeit temporarily.” He added.

“When building bridges, roads and structures, it will be decided who will build them and the work will proceed accordingly.” Informed Spokesman Pant._Rss
