Two rhinos have been found dead in Chitwan National Park (CNP) on a single day. The Park office said that one rhino was found dead at the Balmiki Tiger Reserve area in India on Monday after it was swept away by the Narayani River.
CNP’s Information Officer, Ashok Ram, said information has been received from the Balmiki Tiger Reserve that the animal died after half an hour of being washed away by the Narayani via the Gandak Barrage.
Ram said the Balmiki Tiger Reserve cremated the dead rhino after conducting a post-mortem examination as per the Indian protocol.
Another rhino was found dead at the edge of the Number 1 view tower at Bankatta Bangachhiya under CNP’s Sauraha sector. The male rhino around 12 years old was found dead.
It is suspected that the animal might have died after a clash with another rhino. CNP stated that the rear leg of the rhino was broken.
However, the horn and hoof of the dead rhino was intact, Ram said. Seven rhinos have died due to various causes within three months of this year inside CNP. There are 605 rhinos inside the CNP at present.
