The proposal to designate Lumbini, the birthplace of Gautam Buddha, as a heritage site at risk has been disapproved. This proposal was discussed and voted on during the 46th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, which is currently taking place in New Delhi, India.
The session was attended by a team that included the Vice Chair of the Lumbini Development Trust, Dr. Lhyarkal Lama, the Secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Tourism, and Civil Aviation, Dr. Ganesh Prasad Pandey, along with other officials.
Out of the 21 countries represented at the event, representatives from 19 countries stated that Lumbini, being a site of unique importance, should be given time for necessary reforms instead of being listed as a site facing threat.
The amendment to the draft proposal, put forward by India, was endorsed by the 19 other countries, according to Sanuraj Shakya, Member Secretary at the Lumbini Development Trust.
Since 2002, UNESCO had warned Nepal that anti-conservation activities, such as the random construction of infrastructures, were occurring in Lumbini and that it might be listed as a heritage site at risk.
