Nepal opened its mountains for climbing in 1949 and till date it has listed 326 mountains in the list of climbing mountains which are grouped into different categories depending on their height and under whose authority they lie. The Ministry of Tourism is responsible for the expedition peaks above 6,500 m, while the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) is responsible for the peaks that are below 6500m and above 5800m. Mountaineering to peaks below 5800m don't require permits from authorized members, however, they need to have other forms of permit to enter into that specific region.

What is Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA)?

Nepal Mountaineering Association is a non-governmental, non-profit and non-political organisation, which has been authorized to work as a national alpine association to promote mountain tourism, climbing sports and protect mountain environments. It has been mandated to issue permits for 33 mountains which have been categorized into group A and group B. Rest of others peak permits are given by the Government of Nepal, Nepal Tourism Board and Civil Aviation.
