Pathibhara Temple, located in the hills of Taplejung district in eastern Nepal, is a special and sacred place for many people. The Story Behind Pathibhara
The story of Pathibhara Temple is connected to local legends. It is said that many years ago, some shepherds from the Limbu community lost their cattle in the hills. They prayed to Goddess Pathibhara, and miraculously, the cattle were returned to them. To show their gratitude, the shepherds built a small shrine at the place where they believed the goddess appeared. Since then, Pathibhara has been a place where people come to pray, hoping their wishes will come true.
Goddess Pathibhara is known as a "wish-fulfilling" goddess, and people visit the temple with hopes of good health, wealth, and happiness. They bring offerings like flowers, vermilion, and even animals as part of their prayers. Many couples and families come here to ask for the goddess’s blessings.
Getting to Pathibhara
Reaching Pathibhara is an adventure. Most people start their journey in Phungling, the main town of Taplejung district. You can get there by road or by flying to Suketar Airport, which is close by. From Phungling, the trek to the temple is about 19 kilometers and usually takes 6 to 8 hours. The path is well-marked and goes through beautiful forests filled with rhododendron, pine, and oak trees. As you walk, you can enjoy stunning views of the hills and valleys around you.
For those who find the trek too difficult, there are horses or porters available to help carry your belongings, or even to help you if needed. Along the way, there are several resting spots and small lodges where you can stop, rest, and take in the peaceful surroundings.
A Place of Peace and Beauty
When you reach the temple, you’ll find a simple yet deeply spiritual place. The main shrine is surrounded by prayer flags and bells, with smaller shrines dedicated to other gods and goddesses. The atmosphere is calm, filled with the sound of prayers and the gentle ringing of bells. The view from the temple is something truly special. On clear days, you can see the majestic Himalayan peaks, including Kanchenjunga, Makalu, and Everest. The sight of these snow-covered mountains is both breathtaking and humbling, adding to the sacred feeling of the place.

The temple is especially busy during major Hindu festivals like Dashain and Tihar, when many people come to offer special prayers. The Limbu community also celebrates an important festival called ‘Chasok Tangnam’ at the temple, where they pray to the goddess for a good harvest and prosperity.
