The Ganges river dolphin was photographed in the Narayani River by a local nature guide Tek Mahato, providing the most recent photographic evidence of a dolphin in the river.
Dolphins from the Ganges River are now extremely rare in Nepal because there haven’t been any dolphin sightings here for the past ten years.
In fact, only 3,500 to 5,000 Ganges river dolphins still live in the major Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna river basins as of the current distribution map.
Gangetic river dolphins were discovered in the Mahakali River thirty years ago, but due to intensive human activity, habitat disruption from dam construction, and overfishing, their already dwindling population faced extinction.
The return of Ganges dolphins to the Narayani shows that life will return to the world’s rivers if we take the right steps to restore and protect them.
