Fulapti falls on the seventh day of the 10 day Dashain festival. In Nepali, Ful means flower and Pati means leaves and plants. On this day nine types of flowers and plant leaves which represent nine different goddesses are offered traditionally. This day holds great religious belief among Nepalis. It is believed that bringing fulpati and offering it to the goddess brings health, wealth and prosperity.
This tradition dates back to the period of King Prithvi Narayan Shah the king of Gorkha, who started ruling from the Hanuman Dhoka Durbar of Kathmandu after conquering Kathmandu in 1768 during the national unification.
The main function takes place in the Dashainghar which is in Hanuman Dhoka in Kathmandu where Fulpati is brought from Nuwakot Durbar. To mark the occasion a special parade is performed by the Nepal Army in Kathmandu with great pomp and witnessed by important delegates.
Dashain is the biggest festival of Nepal. Although the festival starts on the day of Ghatasthapana, the festive flavor takes hold from Fulpati. All the offices throughout the country close from this day of Fulpati to celebrate Dashain and people arrive in their native homes and villages to celebrate with family, relatives and friends.
