4, Nov 2026 | nepaltraveller.com

The final celebration of Tihar brings brothers and sisters together through seven-coloured tika, traditional blessings, flowers and a timeless promise of love and protection.

In Nepal, the colourful celebration of Tihar reaches its most heartfelt moment with Bhai Tika, a festival dedicated to the bond between brothers and sisters. Celebrated on the final day of Tihar, also known as Yama Panchak, Bhai Tika brings families together through sacred rituals, prayers, traditional food and the exchange of blessings. At the centre of this celebration is the beautiful seven-coloured tika, symbolising love, protection and wishes for a long and prosperous life.

The Sacred Story Behind Bhai Tika

Bhai Tika has its roots in Hindu mythology. According to traditional belief, Yama, the god of death, visited his sister Yamuna, who welcomed him with flowers, special food and a sacred tika. Deeply moved by her affection, Yama blessed the occasion, associating the ritual with protection and longevity.

This story remains central to the festival, reflecting the belief that the relationship between siblings extends beyond everyday responsibilities and represents lifelong care and affection.

Seven Colours and Their Cultural Significance

One of the most recognisable traditions of Bhai Tika in Nepal is Saptarangi Tika, the seven-coloured mark applied vertically to the forehead.

Sisters prepare a sacred space, perform prayers and apply tika while wishing their brothers good health, happiness and prosperity. Depending on family and community traditions, five-coloured tika is also used.

Brothers are adorned with garlands of Makhamali (globe amaranth) and marigold flowers. Makhamali is particularly valued for its long-lasting blossoms, traditionally associated with enduring affection.

Traditional Foods, Gifts and Family Gatherings

Bhai Tika celebrations are incomplete without traditional Nepali delicacies. Sisters prepare sel roti, fruits, sweets, dry fruits and other festive offerings.

Following the rituals, brothers and sisters exchange tika, blessings and gifts. Although customs differ among communities, the celebration emphasises mutual respect, gratitude and family unity.

Among Nepal's Newar community, the occasion is observed as Kija Puja, with distinctive rituals that reflect the community's cultural heritage.

When Is Bhai Tika in Nepal in 2026?

In 2026, Bhai Tika falls on Wednesday, November 11 (Kartik 25, 2083 BS). According to the Nepal Calendar Determination Committee, the auspicious time for applying tika is 11:07 AM Nepal time. However, the committee has clarified that families may also perform the ritual later in the day.

A Celebration Beyond Colours

Beyond its colourful tika and festive traditions, Bhai Tika represents a bond strengthened by shared memories, blessings and affection. As families gather across Nepal, the festival continues to preserve a cherished cultural tradition, reminding generations that the deepest meaning of Tihar lies in the relationships that bring people together.
