Nepal’s mountaineering community marked another historic moment on Mount Everest as veteran climbers Kami Rita Sherpa and Lhakpa Sherpa achieved new records during the Spring 2026 climbing season. (The Department of Tourism, Nepal)
Kami Rita Sherpa successfully reached the summit of Everest for the 32nd time on 17 May 2026 at 10:12 am, extending his own world record for the highest number of successful ascents of the world’s tallest mountain by any climber in history. Revered globally for his unparalleled high-altitude experience, Kami Rita has spent decades guiding climbers through the Himalayas and has become one of the defining figures of Nepal’s mountaineering legacy.
Previously, he earned a Guinness World Record following his 31st successful ascent of Everest on 27 May 2025. With yet another successful climb, his extraordinary consistency and endurance continue to redefine the limits of human achievement in extreme-altitude mountaineering.
On the same day, renowned Nepali mountaineer Lhakpa Sherpa achieved her 11th successful ascent of Everest at 9:30 am, setting a new record for the highest number of Everest summits by a female climber. Her latest achievement further solidifies her place among the world’s most accomplished female mountaineers and highlights the growing recognition of women in high-altitude climbing.
Lhakpa Sherpa had previously created a Guinness World Record after completing her 10th ascent of Everest on 12 May 2022, becoming the woman with the highest number of successful Everest summits. Over the years, her journey has become a symbol of resilience, perseverance and determination, inspiring climbers around the world.
The achievements of both climbers once again place Nepal at the centre of global mountaineering excellence. Their records not only celebrate individual endurance and determination, but also reflect the immense contribution of the Sherpa community to Himalayan expeditions and Everest history.
