MYAGDI
Preparations have been made for the operation of 'Mauriz Herzog Trail' connecting the base camp of Annapurna I Himal at Annapurna Gaonpalika-4 of Myagdi. Representatives of the village municipality, the Nepal Tourism Board, and the Travel Agencies Association (TAN) have conducted an on-site study to operate the trail named after Maurice Herzog , a French national who climbed the 8,000-meter-high mountain for the first time. A team comprising village chairman Damba Bahadur Pun, chief administrative officer Navin Subedi and Gandaki state chairman Sushil Poudel, who had gone to the base camp on November 29, returned on Saturday.
After 70 years of mountaineering, the base camp is connected by a basic trial, said Pun, who is engaged in publicity and promotion to attract tourists. The village municipality has named the trail connecting the northern base camp of Annapurna I Himal, 8,091 meters high, from Narchang as 'Mauriz Hargoz Tail'.
A trail has been prepared from Narchang to connect the base camp along the Mistrikhola. Herzog set the rare record of climbing Annapurna I, taking the first step on a mountain higher than 8,000 feet. Three years after the first ascent of Annapurna, it is also called the oldest mountain because of the human footsteps on Mt. Everest.
Poudel, president of Tan Gandaki Pradesh, said that there would be a new 'brand' in the base camp trek of Annapurna I as it is as difficult and 'wild' as the Mauriz period. "The old trail have been replaced by roads," he said.
The village municipality has prepared a map of the trail. Last January, the first Annapurna Tourism Festival was held in Narchang to promote the trail connecting Annapurna base camp. The Department of Tourism has already signed a contract for the construction of the trail. Basic trail, suspension bridges, Phadke bridges and stairs have been constructed. A 'shelter' has been constructed for the tourists coming on foot. Since there are no hotels or lodges, camping is a must.
The base camp can be reached in three days from Narchang via Chhotepa, Humkhola and Bhusket. Tej Gurung, chairman of the Conservation Area Management Committee, Narchang, said that not only mountaineering but also waterfalls, lakes, mountains, wildlife and flora are attractive. The shortest, most scenic and safest way to reach the Annapurna base camp, which has a low risk of accidents due to its wide span, was identified nine years ago. Earlier, they had to walk for a week in the jungle to reach the Annapurna base camp by helicopter. Some people thought that the ABC camp in Kaski was the base camp.
The leaders of Narchang had identified the fact that Annapurna Himal and the base camp were in Myagdi in 2068 BS. This is the shortest way to reach Annapurna base camp. The road taken by Nilgiri Hydropower Project from Bensigaun of Narchang to Chhotepa is extending to Nilgiri and Dobhan Humkhola of Annapurna River.
From Humkhola you can reach Bhusket one day and the base camp the next day. The natural beauty of Annapurna base camp at an altitude of 4,500 meters above sea level is breathtaking. During the trek, one can observe mountains, waterfalls, glaciers and various flora, fauna and wildlife. The Annapurna base camp has blue and round lakes at the foot of the Annapurna, Frank, Tilicho and Nilgiri mountains. The shadow of the mountains can be seen in the lake between the dry and desolate mountains. Many mountain peaks can be observed from one place.
The lake is about one kilometer long and 500 meters wide. The natural lake is formed by collecting water from the melting snow of Annapurna Himal. The beauty of the lake fascinates and enlivens. After seeing the lakes and mountains, one forgets the pain of hiking.
