Himalayan Guardian Nepal launches Nepal’s first government-approved, device-enabled tourist insurance system to restore transparency, safety, and global trust in adventure travel.

Nepal has long been recognized globally as one of the world’s most attractive destinations for adventure tourism. For decades, the country earned a reputation for safety, thanks especially to the unmatched expertise and dedication of the Sherpa community and the guiding excellence of Nepali mountaineers and trekking professionals.

However, in the last decade, Nepal’s tourism image suffered a major setback due to the rise of fraudulent insurance claims. With the easy introduction of helicopter services, several unethical practices emerged in the rescue and medical sector. A number of unauthorized actors exaggerated helicopter evacuation costs, while some medical institutions engaged in unnecessary tests and inflated bills. These fraudulent activities were widely exposed in international media, damaging Nepal’s credibility as a safe destination.

As a result, insurance premiums for Nepal increased significantly, and several well-known international insurance companies even stopped issuing travel and trekking insurance to their clients visiting Nepal. Adding to the crisis, multiple unregistered and unauthorized insurance companies began selling insurance products within Nepal. Operating without approval from the Nepal Insurance Authority, these entities violated national regulations and were found to be involved in fraudulent practices, often in collaboration with certain companies and hospitals. This is a major embarrassment for a country that considers tourism as one of its key industries.

To address these long-standing challenges and restore Nepal’s global reputation, Himalayan Guardian Nepal (HGN), in collaboration with IGI Prudential, with approval from the Nepal Insurance Authority, and the Nepal Telecommunications Authority, has introduced Nepal’s first device-supported package system with insurance for foreign tourists. This system is officially authorized by the Government of Nepal, and the insurance underwriting is handled by Prudential Insurance Company, a licensed Nepali insurer—ensuring transparency, legal compliance, and full accountability.

With this new system, the chances of fraudulent helicopter billing, unnecessary medical treatment, and false insurance claims are drastically minimized. Every insured tourist is provided with a GPS-based tracking device, which accurately records altitude, route, movement, and emergency activation. This real-time data ensures that only genuine rescue operations receive approval and payment.

HGN strongly believes that this innovation now makes Nepal’s tourism insurance reliable, affordable, and globally trustworthy for travelers of all nationalities.
