In the past 24 hours, the Polish authorities confirmed 9,073 positive COVID-19 tests.

WARSAW, Feb.

The Polish government expects the number of new daily COVID-19 cases to stay above 10,000 after the most recent figures showed a rise in infections on Thursday. In the past 24 hours, the Polish authorities confirmed 9,073 positive COVID-19 tests. The day before, 8,694 new cases were reported. As of Thursday, 1,614,446 people in Poland have at one point been confirmed infected and 41,582 have died since the start of the pandemic.

The Polish Health Ministry said that 12,188 coronavirus patients were hospitalized, and 1,295 of them were on ventilators. Over 2.3 million Poles have already received at least one dose since vaccination started in late 2020, according to Michal Dworczyk, the government's coordinator of the vaccination campaign.

Dworczyk also admitted that the vaccination drive was slower than initially projected due mainly to distribution issues. As the world is struggling to contain the pandemic, vaccination is underway in some countries with the already-authorized coronavirus vaccines.

Meanwhile, 250 candidate vaccines are still being developed worldwide -- 69 of them in clinical trials -- in countries including Germany, China, Russia, Britain and the United States, according to information released by the World Health Organization on Feb.
