On the eve of the Nepali New Year, 180 Chinese tourists arrived in Kathmandu on a chartered flight by Himalayan Airlines. The group, organized by Nepal Big Mountain Travel, was welcomed by the Minister for Culture, Tourism, and Civil Aviation, Sudan Kirati; the Chinese Ambassador to Nepal, Chen Song; and the CEO of the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB), Dr. Dhananjay Regmi, among others.
Minister Kirati expressed his happiness at welcoming such a large number of Chinese tourists for the first time since the coronavirus pandemic. "Guests are god. We always welcome foreign guests as gods," he said, adding that he believed such activities would help strengthen Nepal-China relations. He also expressed hope that Chinese tourists would enjoy Nepal, as some cities in the country are similar to Chinese cities.
Chinese Ambassador Song stated that China has allowed Chinese tourists to travel abroad after the coronavirus came under control, and he was happy to welcome Chinese tourists to Nepal. Similarly, CEO Regmi mentioned that the arrival of Chinese tourists has made Nepal's tourism industry more excited, as it has been hit hard since 2019.
Proprietor of Nepal Big Mountain Travel and tourism entrepreneur Sudarshan Nepal expressed his happiness at the arrival of Chinese tourists, especially after China listed Nepal as a tourism destination on March 10, 2021, after the pandemic.
During their one-week stay in Nepal, the Chinese tourists will visit various tourist sites in the Kathmandu Valley as well as Poon Hill. Minister Kirati also shared that Nepal is looking to directly connect Pokhara International Airport with China by air, and he believes that there is a great role for the Chinese government in the construction of the airport.
