Kathmandu is also said to be the valley of Gods, where you can find shrines and temples dedicated to different deities. The city filled with hustle-bustle also has hidden in the alleys and corners, some tranquil places to escape from the busy everyday life.

One of such places, rightly describing how just a short distance makes a difference in the hustling city, is the Shree Ghaa. Just near the southern corner of the busy alleys of Thamel, there lies a small square of Kathe Simbhu Stupa. Located in the Chandraman Singh Marg that connects Thamel with Durbar Square, the stupa is known by only a few people. So, tourists make their rest here only by coincidence.

Entering from a gate with few souvenir shops on either side, one can directly view the beautifully decorated Kathe Simbhu Stupa, a small replica of the Swayambhunath. The place is open for everyone, and no entrance fee is charged. The structure dates back to around the 1650s. It is also said that it was built for people who cannot pay their visit to the Swayambhunath as it is located on a high hill. Around the stupa, there are dozens of other small stupas and temples filling the square with a peaceful vibe.

On the northeastern part of the square, there is the Tibetan-style Drubgon Jangchup Choeling Monastery, vibrant and colorful. One can go in, take a round spinning the player wheels or spin the giant prayer wheel just on the left of the entrance of the monastery. Another calming thing to do there can be lighting a candle for someone.

You can also see people scattering grains for the hundreds of pigeons around the Stupa. There also is a small school, and you may come across children playing in the yard. Nepali arts, thangkas, handicrafts, etc. shops surround the square, and there also are some small local cafes.

Amidst the lively alleys around the Thamel area, this place, also known by the name Nagha Bahal is hidden with not many visitors coming around. But, now that you know that there also is the mini Swayambhunath where you can feel the serenity as a short break, do take steps around the Shree Ghaa.

Happy Traveling!
