Kaski District is a culturally diverse and naturally beautiful region of Nepal, home to Pokhara and the gateway to the Annapurna Himalayas.

Kaski District is one of the most important and beautiful districts of Nepal. It lies in Gandaki Province and is best known for being home to Pokhara, the provincial capital and one of the country’s leading tourist cities. With its dramatic Himalayan scenery, tranquil lakes, rich cultural diversity and developing urban facilities, Kaski plays a central role in the social, economic and tourism sectors of western Nepal.


Geographical Setting


Kaski District covers an area of approximately 2,017 square kilometres. The district has highly varied topography, extending from river valleys at about 450 metres above sea level to some of the world’s highest Himalayan peaks.

The northern part of Kaski includes sections of the Annapurna mountain range, and the district offers views of famous peaks such as Annapurna I (8,091 m), Machhapuchchhre (Fishtail), Hiunchuli and Dhaulagiri. Major rivers flowing through the district include the Seti Gandaki, Modi and Madi.

Kaski is bordered by Lamjung District to the east, Parbat to the west, Myagdi to the north, and Syangja and Tanahun to the south.

 


Population and People


According to the 2021 National Census of Nepal, Kaski District has a population of about 60 thousand people. The district is ethnically and culturally diverse, with communities including Gurung, Magar, Brahmin, Chhetri, Newar, Thakali and others.

Nepali is the main language spoken, while Gurung, Magar and Newari languages are also used in different areas. The majority of the population follows Hinduism, with a significant Buddhist minority and smaller groups of other faiths.

Kaski is internationally recognised for its natural beauty and tourism facilities. Major attractions include:

Phewa Lake – A famous freshwater lake in Pokhara, popular for boating and mountain reflections

Begnas Lake and Rupa Lake – Peaceful lakes located east of Pokhara

Sarangkot – A hilltop viewpoint renowned for sunrise views and paragliding

Devi’s Fall (Patale Chhango) – A unique underground waterfall

Gupteshwor Mahadev Cave – A sacred cave located near Devi’s Fall

World Peace Pagoda (Shanti Stupa) – A Buddhist monument overlooking Pokhara Valley

Annapurna Conservation Area – One of the most popular trekking regions in the world

Kaski is one of the more developed districts of Nepal in terms of education, health and infrastructure. The district is increasingly regarded as an educational hub of western Nepal.

Road networks, health services and urban facilities are well developed in Pokhara, while rural areas continue to improve through government and community-based development programmes.
