Fun Facts-Red Panda

10, Jan 2025 | nepaltraveller.com

The Red Panda, also known as “Lesser Panda” is a small mammal native to Eastern Himalayas and Southwestern China. The red panda is a bit larger than a domestic cat, boasting a bear-like body covered in thick russet fur. Its belly and limbs are black, with striking white markings on the sides of its head and above its small eyes.

Known for their agility, red pandas are acrobatic creatures that spend most of their time in trees. Around half of their natural habitat lies in the Eastern Himalayas. They use their long, bushy tails for balance while climbing and also wrap them around their bodies for warmth in the winter. Although primarily herbivores, the name "panda" is thought to come from the Nepali word ponya, which refers to a bamboo- or plant-eating animal.

These fascinating creatures are hiding many facts within themselves which should be known to everyone! So here are a few fun facts about The Red Panda.

Tiny but Terrific

Red pandas may be small enough to fit into your lap (if they’d let you), but don't let their size fool you! These pint-sized adventurers are expert climbers, and they spend most of their time in the trees, showing off their acrobatic skills like little forest gymnasts.

Not Fully Vegetarian

You would probably think that these adorable creatures are fully vegetarian but you’d be surprised to know that they aren’t fully vegetarian! Funny thing is, they’re technically vegetarian carnivores. You heard that right! Despite their biological order as carnivores—thanks to their meat-eating ancestors—they rarely eat anything more than bamboo and the occasional insect. So, technically, they’re still classified as carnivores, but they’ve pretty much gone vegetarian!

Night Owls of the Himalayas

We humans have a fixed bedtime at night but red pandas don’t! These nocturnal little guys love to roam around at night, searching for snacks and exploring the forest. It's like their night shift starts when everyone else is sleeping.

The Secretive Superstars

Red pandas are experts at keeping to themselves. They're quiet, sneaky, and can disappear into the trees before you even spot them. Catching a glimpse of one in the wild feels like finding a hidden gem in the forest.

Not actual thumbs

Red Pandas actually have a false thumb, which is an extended wrist bone that’s developed over time to help them climb trees with ease and handle bamboo like pros. It’s like nature gave them a thumbs up!

Sadly, these unique and charming creatures are facing serious threats to their survival. Habitat loss, climate change, and poaching have put them on the endangered species list. It’s crucial that we act now to protect their forests and ensure the red panda’s place so that our future generations get to experience these facts in real time and they don’t become history.
