The Government of Nepal, upon the Nepal Mountaineering Association's (NMA) request, has decided to expt the climbing royalty for the Jugal Himal expedition team.
This decision was reached during the Cabinet meeting on March 1, 2023, and was communicated to the press by Ms. Rekha Sharma, the Minister for Communication and Information Technology.
To mark 50 years of Nepal-Korea relations, a joint expedition team from both countries aims to summit Jugal I (6,590m) and II (6,518m) this season. These peaks, located in the Jugal Himal range within Jugal Rural Municipality of Sindhupalchok, were opened for climbing activities by the Government of Nepal last year.
As per the Cabinet's decision, climbing royalty will be waived for seven Korean and three Nepali climbers who will undertake the Jugal I and Jugal II expeditions starting April 7. The NMA has been actively promoting Jugal Himal since these peaks were opened for climbing.
Following the Government's decision last year to open five peaks of the Jugal Himal range for climbing, the NMA signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Jugal Rural Municipality to promote these peaks. During a visit to Korea last August, NMA officials approached the Korean team through the Korean Alpine Association and Um Hong Gil Human Foundation for a joint expedition.
The team has already conducted route survey work with the collaboration of the NMA, Korean Alpine Federation, Um Hong Gil Human Foundation, and Jugal Rural Municipality last January.
The Ministry of Tourism, Culture, and Civil Aviation, along with various organizations including the NMA, Korean Alpine Association, Um Hong Gil Human Foundation, Jugal Rural Municipality, Korean Embassy in Nepal, Korea Tours and Trekking Operator Association of Nepal, and Korean Alpine Rescue Association, will jointly organize the expedition.
The team's objective is to conquer the uncharted peaks of Jugal I and II in Sindhupalchowk district. They will be sent off by Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda' and Korean Ambassador to Nepal Park Taeyoung on April 6, 2024.
