Maulakalika Temple, located in Gaindakot Municipality in the Nawalpur district of Nepal, is a renowned Hindu pilgrimage site dedicated to Goddess Kali (Kalika), a fierce form of Goddess Durga symbolizing power, energy, and new beginnings. Situated atop Maula Hill at an elevation of 561 meters (1,841 feet), the temple offers a blend of spiritual significance and natural beauty.
Historical and Spiritual Significance
The name "Maulakalika" derives from "Maula" (hill) and "Kalika" (another name for Goddess Kali). According to legends, the temple was established after a divine revelation to a local priest who dreamt of the goddess instructing him to construct the temple. Historically, King Manimukunda Sen of Palpa is said to have worshipped Goddess Kalika here during the 16th century.
The temple is particularly revered during major Hindu festivals like Dashain (September–October) and Chaitra Dashain (March–April), attracting thousands of devotees.
Visiting Maulakalika Temple
Visitors can hike up Maula Hill, which takes approximately an hour via well-maintained trails with steps and resting spots. A cable car service, operational since April 2023, offers a quick 3–4 minute ride to the temple. Vehicles can be parked at designated areas near the base, and public transportation is available from nearby towns like Narayanghat. The trail passes through dense forests filled with chirping birds and rustling leaves, creating a tranquil ambiance for pilgrims. At the summit, visitors are greeted by the beautifully adorned idol of Goddess Kalika in a temple complex reflecting traditional Nepali architecture. The panoramic views include the Terai plains, Narayani River, Chitwan Valley, Devghat Dham, and distant Himalayan peaks like Mount Manaslu.
