Out of the 60 officially recognized indigenous nationalities of Nepal, many have lived within or at the foot of the Himalayas for centuries, shaping cultures so finely calibrated to their specific terrain that the mountains are inseparable from their religion, their oral tradition, their economic history, and their sense of who they are.
