In addition to being a haven for hikers and mountaineers, Nepal, which sits among the gorgeous Himalayas, is also an enigmatic jewel for anyone who loves butterflies. With a staggering 651 species accounting for 3.72 percent of the world's butterflies, this enchanting country offers a captivating haven for butterfly watching. For centuries, Nepal has enticed butterfly experts from all corners of the globe with its exquisite specimens. Since the early days of British residency, these delightful creatures have captivated the imagination of explorers, who meticulously studied and cataloged them. While such activities are now banned in Nepal, the legacy of butterfly observation lives on thanks to the pioneering efforts of Japanese scientists who established the Natural History Museum at Swayambhu in 1974.
Official records proudly boast Nepal's rich butterfly diversity, with an impressive 651 species, making it a butterfly enthusiast's paradise. The mild daytime temperatures of Kathmandu Valley, hovering around 18 oC in mid-winter, provide a conducive environment for butterflies year-round. However, the best seasons to witness these airborne marvels in all their splendor are late March or April, mid-May or mid-June, and late August or September.
The forested areas within the valley still harbor numerous butterfly species, including the open country near Chobar Gorge. While the activity is relatively subdued in this region, it is home to a plethora of Oriental species, which grace the landscape with their vibrant hues and delicate patterns. Additionally, approximately 10 percent of Nepal's butterfly population comprises Palearctic species found at altitudes above 3,000 meters. On the other hand, the remaining 90 percent are Oriental species, found in abundance around Swayambhu, the base of the hills, and the enchanting forest streams of Godavari, Nagarjun, Budhanilkantha, and Sundarijal.
To truly immerse yourself in Nepal's butterfly wonderland, venture into the forested hilltops of Phulchowki, Jamachowk, and Shivapuri.
