Beyond Paragliding: 5 Underrated Adventure Activities to Try in Pokhara

16, Sep 2026 | nepaltraveller.com

Pokhara offers more than paragliding the article spotlights five underrated thrills: the world-steep ZipFlyer at Sarangkot, open-cockpit ultralight flights, waterfall canyoning near Lwang Village, peaceful paddleboarding on Phewa or Begnas Lake, and downhill mountain biking through the surrounding ridges, with a closing tip to book through trusted local operators and check seasonal conditions.

Paragliding gets all the attention in Pokhara, and for good reason but the valley's mix of glacial rivers, deep gorges, quiet lakes, and ridgelines hides plenty of other thrills. Here are five activities worth adding to your itinerary.

1. ZipFlyer at Sarangkot

zipline

Billed as one of the steepest ziplines on earth, ZipFlyer sends riders from Sarangkot's 1,550-meter perch down to Hemja, covering 1.8 kilometers and a 600-meter vertical drop in about two minutes. Speeds climb toward 140 km/h, with the Annapurna range and Machhapuchhre dead ahead. Go early to catch sunrise at the launch point and beat the afternoon crowds.

2. Ultralight Flying

For travelers who find paragliding too dependent on weather, an open-cockpit ultralight offers a similar rush with more control. Flights leave from Old Pokhara Airport and run from 15 minutes (a quick city-and-lake loop) up to 90 minutes toward the glaciers, reaching altitudes of up to 12,000 feet. Book the early morning slot, between roughly 6:30 and 9:30 a.m., when the air is calmest and mountain views are sharpest.

3. Canyoning near Lwang Village

canyoning

About 22 kilometers north of Pokhara, in the shadow of Machhapuchhre, canyoning routes wind through waterfalls and rock gorges carved by glacial meltwater. Expect rappelling, pool jumps, and rock slides in full wetsuit and harness gear no prior experience needed, since guides handle the technical work. The post-monsoon months, roughly September through November, bring the strongest water flow.

4. Stand-Up Paddleboarding

Phewa Lake's rowboats get all the postcards, but a paddleboard gets you somewhere quieter. Launch near Khapaudi or Pame on Phewa, or head to the calmer Begnas Lake, and glide into coves the tour boats never reach. It's a low-key, low-cost way to photograph the Annapurna range reflected in still water, and boards are easy to rent by the hour along the lakeside.

5. Downhill Mountain Biking

The hills around Sarangkot and Pame offer genuine single-track riding, not just paved cycling paths. The Sarangkot-to-Lakeside route is a technical descent through stone staircases and terraced fields, while the Pame-to-Lauruk circuit runs a gentler line along Phewa Lake's western shore past fishing hamlets. Bikes and helmets are widely available for hire in Lakeside.

Before You Go

Whichever activity you choose, book through an established local operator, confirm what safety gear is included, and check seasonal conditions water levels for canyoning, wind for aerial activities, and visibility for anything mountain-facing all shift with the season. Pokhara rewards travelers who look past the paraglider-filled skies, and these five activities are a solid place to start.
