Kachankawal, Jhapa: Exploring Nepal’s Historic Lowest Point at 58 Metres

1, Nov 2026 | nepaltraveller.com

Discover Kachankawal, a lesser-known destination in eastern Nepal, where geographical history, peaceful Terai landscapes and local culture come together.

Nepal is famous for its towering Himalayan peaks, but in the southeastern corner of Jhapa lies a destination known for the opposite reason. Kachankawal, also known as Kechana Kawal, stands at 58 metres (190 feet) above sea level, according to local government and tourism records. Located in Kachankawal Rural Municipality of Koshi Province, near the Nepal–India border, this peaceful destination offers visitors a fascinating glimpse into Nepal’s geographical diversity.

A Landmark of Nepal’s Geography

Kachankawal has long been celebrated as Nepal’s lowest geographical point, with its landmark elevation recorded at 58 metres above sea level. The site gained national recognition during the reign of King Birendra, and a commemorative pillar was established to highlight its geographical significance.

Although the landmark is recorded at 58 metres, different surveys have reported varying elevations. Topographic maps have indicated approximately 63 metres, while older records mentioned 70 metres. A 2017 survey also identified Mukhiyapatti Musharniya in Dhanusha District at 59 metres, raising questions about the country's absolute lowest point. Nevertheless, Kachankawal retains its historical identity as Nepal's lowest-point landmark.

Discovering the Beauty of the Terai

Beyond its geographical importance, Kachankawal offers peaceful rural scenery. Vast paddy fields, green tea plantations, betel nut groves and traditional settlements create a landscape quite different from Nepal's mountainous destinations.

The surrounding villages are home to indigenous communities, including the Rajbanshi, Gangai, Tajpuriya and Santhal. Their languages, festivals, agricultural practices and traditional lifestyles contribute to the region's rich cultural identity.

Visitors can explore local ponds, village markets and agricultural surroundings while experiencing the slower rhythm of life in eastern Nepal.

Historical Attractions Around Kachankawal

One of the area's main attractions is the Kechana Kawal monument and park, featuring a pillar that commemorates the site's geographical significance. Two nearby ponds are also associated with local legends involving King Virat from the Mahabharata era.

Travellers can combine their visit with Kichakbadh, a historical and religious site near Bhadrapur connected to the Mahabharata story of Bhima and Kichaka.

How to Reach Kachankawal

Kachankawal is approximately 25 kilometres south of Bhadrapur Airport and around 40 kilometres from Birtamod. Visitors can reach the area by private vehicle or local transport through the rural road network.

The best time to visit is from October to March, when temperatures are generally more comfortable. Heavy monsoon rainfall can cause waterlogging in the low-lying surroundings.

Kachankawal may not have towering peaks or busy tourist attractions, but its remarkable elevation of 58 metres, geographical heritage and peaceful Terai surroundings make it a distinctive destination for travellers exploring eastern Nepal.
