Not the Great Wall of China, This One Is in Nepal!

Hidden in the hills of Gulmi, a remarkable stone walkway connects two historic hilltops, offering breathtaking Himalayan views, ancient royal heritage and a refreshing escape into nature.

At first glance, it might remind you of China's famous Great Wall. But this remarkable stone walkway is right here in Nepal, hidden among the beautiful hills of Dhurkot in Gulmi. Surrounded by lush forests, terraced farmlands and distant Himalayan peaks, this emerging destination is capturing the attention of travellers looking for something different.

Located in Ward No. 6 of Dhurkot Rural Municipality in Lumbini Province, the one-kilometre-long Dhurkot Great Wall connects two historically significant hilltops, Dhurkotkot and Budhikot. Built along a rugged ridgeline, the stone pathway offers visitors a chance to experience the natural beauty and cultural heritage of western Nepal.

The real magic begins as you walk along the elevated pathway. On clear days, the magnificent Dhaulagiri, Annapurna and Machhapuchhre mountain ranges appear on the horizon, while green hills, traditional villages and terraced fields stretch across the valleys below. The peaceful surroundings and spectacular scenery have made the walkway increasingly popular for photography, sightseeing and weekend escapes.

Constructed at a cost of approximately Rs 32.3 million, the project received 70 percent of its funding from Dhurkot Rural Municipality and 30 percent from the federal government. Beyond its scenic appeal, the development aims to encourage tourism, support local businesses and create employment opportunities for nearby communities.

But Dhurkot's charm goes far beyond its newest attraction. The historic Dhurkotkot was once the seat of a kingdom belonging to Nepal's Chaubisi Rajya, a collection of small kingdoms that existed before the country's unification. Today, the area remains an important reminder of Nepal's royal past, with plans underway to preserve its heritage through a museum.

Another fascinating attraction is Bichitra Cave in Dhurkot-5, where natural limestone formations resemble animals and religious figures. Deep inside lies a narrow passage known as Swarga Dwar, or Gateway to Heaven, surrounded by local beliefs and spiritual stories that add mystery to the underground experience.

Nearby Budhikot offers another rewarding stop, featuring a giant Shiva statue, a temple and sweeping views across Gulmi's hills. More than 2,000 saplings have also been planted around the walkway and Budhikot to enhance the landscape.

With plans to connect Dhurkotkot, Budhikot, Bichitra Cave and Martyrs Park into a wider tourism circuit, the municipality hopes to encourage longer visits and strengthen the local economy.

For travellers seeking a destination where history, adventure and Himalayan beauty come together, Dhurkot offers a refreshing discovery. Sometimes, the most extraordinary places are waiting to be explored right here in Nepal.
