JANAKPUR
Kharna is performed on the second day today under Chhath, which is celebrated by worshiping the sun god. The Kharna of Chhath, which reflects the way of life, is called the day of the decay of sin.
Under the kharna, cow dung is used to cover the land with a paste made from Araba rice flour and Devotee fasts all day long. After worshipping the moon in the evening, kheer of sakhar, milk and gamhari rice is cooked in a new earthen stove and in a new earthen vessel.
Special rotis are made of riceflour to cover the offerings during the puja. The offerings are made on banana leaves and are later eaten by the family members.
Kheer, milk, banana, radish, betel leaf and betel nut are included in the offering. The offering is placed on a banana leaf and offered to the Chaathi Mata. It is customary for the Devotee and his family to accept the offerings after the offerings have been made eaten on the same day. The day also marks the beginning of the 36-hour long fasting.
