As an arctic air mass comes into the already cold southern United States, forecasters are warning of hazardous Christmas travel conditions and potentially fatally low temperatures for most of the country.
The polar air moves in while a previous storm system in the northeastern United States slowly dissipates after blanketing some areas of the region with two feet (61 cm) of snow. According to poweroutage.us, a website that records outages across the nation, more than 80,000 consumers in New England were still without power on Sunday morning.
Zack Taylor, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said: "We're looking at much-below normal temperatures, maybe record-low temps coming up to the Christmas break."
According to the National Weather Service's special weather statement from Sunday, the approaching artic front will bring "severe and protracted cold conditions over southern Mississippi and southeast Louisiana."
