Conservation of the one-and-a-half-hundred-year-old suspension bridge at Mangalaghat on the border of Beni municipality-7 and 2 has been started. In 1944, in the Myagdi River, which connects Handebhir of Jamrukkot, Mangalaghat, and Beni Municipality-2, the swing was started to be repaired.
The height of the bridge from the river will be increased from the current one and a steel deck will be placed instead of wood. Lalprasad Sherchan of Baglung Galkot built this bridge using raw iron from the Lukur forest and the skills of the local people of Rumgaon in Myagdi. It is the first in this area. According to Krishna Bahadur Sarki, a local resident, the bridge was built at that time by heating the raw iron into a round and beating it into a chain.
The chain sticks used in the bridge were made using local resources and skills at the same time. At that time, swings were made by placing iron plates on two chain sticks and only one wooden plate. A steel deck will be placed in the place of wooden planks.
The current suspension bridge was developed as a suspension bridge on the initiative of the brothers of Bhimprasad Sherchan, the grandson of Sherchan, the builder of the bridge, who lived in Babiachaur in 2014. The weight of wooden stick was very heavy. There were no bridges in this place before. At that time, when there was a base in Gulmi and Baglung, everyone from Myagdi and Parbat used to cross through this route. For a long time, this was the main route for the locals to cross the Myagdikhola and Warika.
Four years ago, the bridge, which was built using old and local resources in the district, became dilapidated. Now the bridge is dilapidated. Since the bridge has become dilapidated, there has been a problem and risk in traffic. The wood of the old and historically important bridge has rotted. The mesh is rusted.
“The bridge is going to be repaired without spoiling its appearance For the purpose of making the local residents easy and safe to travel and to promote tourism, the bridge repair work has been started with the goal of completing it within the current financial year", Ward President of Beni Municipality-7 Ramesh Shrestha said, "The Beni municipality is going to repair the bridge with the support of the regional suspension bridge program and the social mobilization of Milan Myagdi."
“The cost of rebuilding the forty-two-meter long bridge is estimated to be around Rs 45 lakh. The walls will be demolished and new ones will be built from the old stones, and the old sticks will be stretched,” said Dayaram Shah, a technician of the provincial suspension bridge program._Rss
