The presence of the Delta variant of COVID-19 has been detected in Nepal. During the study of genomic sequencing of COVID-19 in the country, the Delta variant was detected.   

The study was conducted by the National Public Health Laboratory and the Central Department of Biotechnology, Tribhuvan University separately.  

Laboratory Director Dr. Runa Jha said of a total of 42 samples included in the study (26 at laboratory and 16 at the TU)  41 showed the presence of Delta variant while one had the Alpha variant. 

The 41 samples were collected in the past two months and one in April-May. The Laboratory was technically supported by the World Health Organisation while the TU was assisted by the Washington University.  Now, Nepal is able to conduct genomic sequencing of infectious diseases.
