After Dhanurmas Puja, Lord Shiva, who went to bask in the sun on Shivapuri Hill, returned, and in the evening, Aarati was performed at Pashupatinath Temple to bring him back.
Every year when Suryanarayan is in the sign of Sagittarius, Dhanurmas Puja is performed at the Pashupatinath main temple. There is a rule since ancient times to close the temple for the whole day on Tuesday after Dhanurmamas Puja. It is believed that after this puja, Lord Shiva will also go to Shivapuri hill to bask in the sun, so the temple will be closed.
It is customary for Dhanurmas Puja to be attended by all four Bhatta Brahmins of Pashupatinath, Palowala Bhandari, Shree's brother-in-law and other Brahmins. It is a tradition to offer Pashupatinath Adi Kalash, Panchamrit Bath, Tailambhya, Shriyantra Writing, Sringar, Sri Chakra Puja, Incense, and Lamp. Balbhog, and Khichdi are also offered as the main feast.
At Pashupatinath, Brahmins make khichadi in two khandkulas for Mahabhog. Khichadi is made with sakhkhar in one and sugar in the other. At other times, the feast offered at Pashupatinath contains salty ingredients.
According to both the Lunar month and Solar month, the Dhanurmas puja is celebrated after the month of Poush. Previously, Dhanurmas Puja was performed nine times in the month of Poush, but that tradition has disappeared now. At that time, devotees could also perform Dhanurmas Puja at their own expense. This tradition has now disappeared. Pashupatinath was bathed in warm water on Monday morning before the Dhanurmas puja to save him from the cold.
It is a tradition to bathe Pashupatinath with hot water as it gets cold from Bala Chaturdashi onwards. There is a Vedic Sanatani tradition of feeding Khichdi along with Dhanurmas Puja to protect Pashupatinath from the cold during Meenpachas, even the fish live under the surface of the water to avoid the cold.
“The Pashupatinath temple will be opened for devotees from this morning after regular worship,” said the Spokesman of Pashupatinath Development Fund, Revathiraman Adhikari.
“There is a method of offering soft and smooth material in Dhanurmas Puja. Suryanarayan is in Sagittarius throughout the month of January. Every year in the month of Poush, there is a tradition of worshiping Dhanurmas Puja at the Pashupatinath main temple on a day when there is not much crowd,” said Barun Khatiwada, an employee who has been researching specifically about the tangible and intangible culture of Pashupati region._Rss
