Ghode Jatra: The Horse Festival of Nepal

28, Mar 2025 | nepaltraveller.com

Ghode Jatra is more than just a horse race; it is a celebration of Nepal’s rich history, military tradition, and spiritual beliefs.

Ghode Jatra is one of Nepal's most vibrant and historically significant festivals, celebrated annually in Kathmandu Valley, particularly at Tundikhel, with great enthusiasm. The festival is a unique blend of religious, cultural, and military traditions, involving thrilling horse races, acrobatic performances, and ceremonial rituals. It is believed to symbolize the triumph of good over evil.

The Legend Behind Ghode Jatra

The origins of Ghode Jatra are linked to an ancient legend about a demon named Tundi. According to folklore, Tundi was a fearsome demon who terrorized the people of Kathmandu. After much struggle, he was finally defeated and buried under the open ground known today as Tundikhel. However, people feared that the demon’s spirit might rise again. To prevent this, they rode horses over his grave, believing that the sound of galloping hooves would keep his evil spirit suppressed. This practice eventually evolved into the annual celebration of Ghode Jatra.

How Is Ghode Jatra Celebrated?

Ghode Jatra is celebrated in different ways across Kathmandu Valley, with its main highlights being the grand horse parade at Tundikhel, horse races, and religious rituals performed by the Newar community.

Grand Horse Parade at Tundikhel
The central attraction of Ghode Jatra is the military horse parade, organized by the Nepal Army and Nepal Police at Tundikhel, one of Kathmandu’s largest open grounds. The event includes:

Daring horse stunts performed by trained military personnel.

Acrobatic performances and show jumping demonstrating the agility of both horses and riders.

Procession of high-ranking officials, including the President, Prime Minister, Chief of Army Staff, and other dignitaries who oversee the event.
The parade is not only a celebration but also a demonstration of Nepal’s military strength and preparedness.

Horse Racing Competitions

One of the most exciting aspects of the festival is the high-speed horse racing competitions, where trained riders showcase their skills. The powerful gallops and breathtaking stunts add to the excitement of the event. The galloping of horses over Tundikhel is believed to prevent the resurrection of Tundi’s spirit, ensuring peace and prosperity in the valley.

Celebrations in Kathmandu's Newar Community

For the Newar community of Kathmandu, Ghode Jatra is also a time of religious and cultural festivities. Some of the key events include:

Special rituals at Asan, Indra Chowk, and Hanuman Dhoka.

Worship of Seto Bhairab, a fierce manifestation of Lord Shiva, who is believed to protect the city from evil forces.

Offerings of flowers, food, and prayers to deities to seek blessings for prosperity and well-being.

Bal Kumari Jatra in Patan

In Lalitpur (Patan), Ghode Jatra is observed uniquely with a festival known as Bal Kumari Jatra. During this event:

A sacred chariot of Goddess Bal Kumari is pulled through the streets.

The festival is accompanied by horse races in the surrounding areas, following the belief that horses must be ridden to keep evil forces away.

Locals celebrate with traditional music, dance, and feasts.
