The joint expedition to climb Mount Jugal, organized by Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA), Nepal Tourism Board, and Jugal Rural Municipality, marks a significant event in the context of diplomatic relations between Nepal and the Republic of Korea (RoK). With three Nepali and seven Korean climbers, including renowned figures like Aum Hong Gill and Dawa Yangzum Sherpa leading the teams, the expedition aims to celebrate the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two countries.
Mount Jugal, standing at 6,591 meters, is particularly significant due to its proximity to Kathmandu, making it an accessible yet challenging climb. The decision to open Mount Jugal and five other peaks in the Jugal mountain range for climbing was made by the government in April 2023, further emphasizing the importance of this expedition.
The involvement of Korean trekkers, alongside the climbing teams, highlights the collaborative effort between Nepal and RoK in promoting tourism and fostering cultural exchange through mountaineering. NMA General-Secretary Mohan Lamsal's optimism regarding the expedition's contribution to tourism in Nepal underscores the broader significance of such ventures in enhancing the country's tourism sector and strengthening international relations through tourism diplomacy.
