Kakarvitta, the major transit point in eastern Nepal, has reopened for travelers from third countries. This transit point, located along the Nepal-India border in Jhapa district, had been closed to tourists from third countries due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Mohan Pariyar, the Chief of the Immigration Office at Kakarvitta, announced that the border has reopened for these travelers after four years.
Initially, there were reservations from the Indian side about allowing tourists from third countries to enter, despite Nepal having already lifted its Covid-19 restrictions on foreign tourists.
The Immigration Office received notification from the Indian authorities about the reopening of the border starting August 1.
Since then, travellers from third countries have begun arriving in Nepal via India, and departures from Nepal have also resumed.
Tourism entrepreneurs had expressed concern over the prolonged closure of the Kakarvitta point for visitors from third countries.
With the lifting of restrictions, citizens from over a dozen nations, including the UK, the US, and Switzerland, have entered Nepal via India, and the movement in both directions has commenced.
