Situated at an altitude of 1,600 meters, Sarangkot is one of the most breathtaking sunrise viewpoints in Nepal. Located just a cable car ride, or short drive from the Lakeside Pokhara, this hilltop destination offers a panoramic view of the Annapurna range, Machhapuchhre, Dhaulagiri, and the vast Pokhara Valley. Watching the sunrise from Sarangkot is an experience that stays with you forever.
Journey to the Top
Reaching Sarangkot is an adventure in itself. It is best to start the journey early in the morning, well before dawn, to catch the first light of day. The trip begins with a 30-minute drive from Pokhara, covering approximately 11 kilometers of winding roads that offer glimpses of the valley below. The road is well-paved, but some sections may be narrow and require careful navigation. The cable car ride is also a great option offering panoramic views as you ascend.
Upon reaching the base of Sarangkot, a 30- to 45-minute uphill hike to the viewpoint is required. The trail is well-marked and consists of stone steps, passing through small villages, lush greenery, and terraced fields. Along the way, you may encounter friendly locals, early morning joggers, and fellow travelers making their way to witness the spectacular sunrise. The crisp mountain air, the occasional chirping of birds, and the quiet surroundings set the perfect mood for the spectacle ahead.
For those who prefer a more relaxed ascent, local transportation options such as jeeps and motorbikes are available to take visitors directly to the top. However, the short hike is highly recommended, as it allows you to fully immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the region.
The Moment of Magic
As the sun begins to rise, the sky slowly changes colors, from deep purple to warm orange and golden hues. The peaks of Annapurna and Machhapuchhre begin to glow, creating a picture-perfect scene. The tranquility of the moment, combined with the surreal beauty of nature, makes this sunrise unforgettable. Photographers and nature lovers find themselves mesmerized by the ever-changing colors of the sky and the mountains.
Beyond the Sunrise
While the sunrise is the highlight, Sarangkot offers much more. Paragliding enthusiasts take off from here, soaring above the valley with stunning aerial views of Pokhara and Phewa Lake. There are also small cafés and teahouses where you can enjoy a warm cup of tea while soaking in the scenery. If you love hiking, you can continue exploring nearby trails that lead to beautiful villages and hidden viewpoints.
