Rupakot is a rural settlement located in Kaski District of Gandaki Province, Nepal. Situated on the eastern side of the Pokhara Valley, it is now part of Rupa Rural Municipality following Nepal’s administrative restructuring. The area is known for its elevated position, quiet surroundings and scenic views, offering a calm contrast to the nearby city of Pokhara.
Geography and Natural Setting
Rupakot lies along a hill ridge overlooking parts of the Pokhara Valley. From several vantage points, one can see Rupa Lake and Begnas Lake, two significant freshwater lakes in the region. The surrounding landscape is characterised by forested hills, terraced farmland and rural settlements typical of Nepal’s mid-hill geography.
On clear days, distant views of the Himalayan range are possible. The climate is generally moderate, with warm summers and cool winters, supporting agriculture and comfortable year-round living.
Administrative and Demographic Background
Rupakot formerly functioned as a Village Development Committee (VDC). Census data from the early 1990s recorded a population of fewer than 4,000 people. Today, Rupakot no longer exists as an independent administrative unit and instead forms part of Rupa Rural Municipality.
The population reflects the social diversity of Kaski District, including communities such as Gurung, Brahmin, Chhetri and others. Nepali is the main language spoken, alongside local languages and dialects used within households and communities.
Livelihood and Daily Life
Agriculture remains the primary livelihood in Rupakot. Farmers commonly cultivate rice, maize, millet and seasonal vegetables, while livestock rearing is also widespread. As in many rural areas of Nepal, remittances from family members working elsewhere in Nepal or abroad contribute to household incomes.
Basic infrastructure such as roads, schools and health posts has gradually improved over the years, although Rupakot continues to retain a predominantly rural character.
Tourism and Development
Rupakot has gained increased attention in recent years due to the development of tourism facilities, which has helped bring the area into the spotlight. Its peaceful environment, scenic views and proximity to Pokhara make Rupakot appealing to visitors seeking a quieter, nature-based experience.
Tourism remains limited in scale and largely complements traditional livelihoods. Activities such as village walks, lake viewing and homestay experiences reflect a growing interest in sustainable and community-based tourism.
Rupakot is a representative hill settlement of Nepal’s mid-hill region, combining agricultural traditions with emerging tourism opportunities. With its diverse communities, natural scenery and improving infrastructure, Rupakot plays a modest yet meaningful role in the social and economic landscape of Kaski District.
