The Australian Base Camp is a popular, short walking destination near Pokhara, Nepal, famous for its stunning views of the Annapurna mountain range. It is also commonly known as Australian Camp.

Located in Kaski District within the Annapurna region, Australian Camp sits at an elevation of approximately 2,060 metres and is one of the most accessible short treks from Pokhara. Typically completed within 1-2 days, it is an ideal choice for those seeking a brief yet rewarding Himalayan experience. The trail is well-suited for beginners and families, offering an easy hike through scenic landscapes. At the summit, travellers are rewarded with sweeping sunrise and sunset views of Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and the iconic Machhapuchhre, making it a popular vantage point for both relaxation and photography.

Why is it Called “Australian Base Camp”

The name has a rather accidental origin. It is said that in the late 1980s, trekkers from Austria frequently camped in the area, and locals began calling it “Austrian Camp”. However, the name was difficult for local villagers to pronounce, and it eventually evolved into “Australian Camp”. The area is also traditionally known as Thula Kharka, which means "big pasture" in Nepali.

How to Get There and What to Expect

This walk is the perfect quick nature getaway from the lakeside city of Pokhara. You can complete the main trek in just 1.5 to 2 hours of uphill walking from the trailhead. Here is what a typical trip looks like:

  • - Starting Point: The journey usually begins with a 45-minute to 1-hour drive from Pokhara to the village of Kande.
  • - The Trek Route (Kande to Australian Camp): The walk from Kande is a steady, family-friendly climb on a well-marked path of stone steps. The trail winds through lush forests of rhododendron and oak, which are especially beautiful when the rhododendrons bloom in spring.
  • - Alternative Route: A more culturally immersive alternative is to start from Phedi, walk up to the traditional Gurung village of Dhampus (1–2 hours), and then continue to Australian Camp (another 1.5 hours). This route is slightly longer but offers a richer experience of village life.

What to Do and See at Australian Camp

The real magic of Australian Camp happens at sunrise and sunset.

  • - Panoramic Views: The main reward is a breathtaking 180-degree panorama of the Himalayas. From the camp, you get an uninterrupted view of iconic peaks like Annapurna South (7,219m), Hiunchuli (6,441m), and the sacred Machhapuchhre (Fishtail Mountain, 6,993m).
  • - Overnight Stay: While you can do it as a day walk, it is highly recommended to stay overnight. The sunset paints the peaks gold, the night sky offers excellent stargazing (especially from May to October), and the sunrise is an unforgettable experience as the first light hits the mountains.
  • - Accommodation: Several comfortable teahouses and lodges at the camp offer surprisingly modern amenities, including attached bathrooms, hot showers, Wi-Fi, and charging points.

Practical Tips for Your Trek

  • - Best Time to Visit: The trek can be done all year round, but the clearest mountain views are typically from September to November (autumn) and February to April (spring).
  • - Cost: A trek is very affordable. A standard 2-day package from Pokhara can cost around USD 99 per person for foreign nationals, which includes transport, meals, and lodging. Independent travel is also possible and will be even cheaper.
  • - What to Pack: You are walking at a moderate altitude, so it can get cool in the evenings. Bring a good jacket, comfortable walking shoes, a hat and sunscreen for the daytime sun, and a reusable water bottle (there are water refill stations on the route)
