Thakkhola Thakali Cuisine

Delve into the taste of the authentic Thakali cuisine

Ever since its inception, Thakkhola has attracted a wide audience and remains to be one of the most popular Thakali restaurants in town.

Amidst the cluster of high-end restaurants in Jhamsikhel lies an authentic Thakali restaurant, ‘Thakkhola Thakali Cuisine’. Ever since its inception, the eatery has attracted a wide audience and remains to be one of the most popular Thakali restaurants in town. Founded back in 2010 ‘Thakkhola Thakali Cuisine’ offers you a unique culinary experience.

As you enter the restaurant you are greeted by the warm and friendly staff. There are two different seating arrangements; the regular tables and a traditional Thakali seating arrangement. As you sit down in the Thakali way of seating, you will feel as if you are already somewhere in Mustang. The antique Nepali carved wooden partitions, to traditional materials used on the cushions add an aesthetic value to the restaurant. Furthermore, what makes the restaurant stand out among others is the homely vibe you receive. The attentive staffs take care of your needs with the servings and make you feel like you're at home enjoying a good home cooked meal.

The most popular Thakali appetizer ‘Kanchhyamba’ first arrived at the table. ‘Kanchhyamba’ refers to buckwheat crackers. These buckwheat crackers were light and served with a finely grounded mixture of dried chili, wild peppers, salt and cumin which complimented it nicely. Playing beautifully with your palate, this appetizer succeeds in making you crave for more food.  After enjoying this unique dish, ‘Mutton Bhutuwa’ (Mutton Offal cooked with spices) was served. Although I do not really like mutton, the dish was so crispy and spicy that I couldn't help myself to a second helping. This snack is recommended for all the mutton loves who visit the restaurant. Immediately after finishing ‘Mutton Bhutuwa’, we were served with peoples’ favorite dish ‘Alu Jimmu’. The potatoes weren’t dry at all and the flavor of ‘Jimmu’ was blended well without actually overpowering the dish.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                         Alu Jimbu

After the sumptuous appetizers, the much awaited ‘Thaali’ was served. The Thaali comprised of rice, a stew of local chicken (Local khukhura to jhol), mustard greens (Rayo ko saag), freshly ground tomato pickle, pickled fermented greens (gundruk ko achar), black lentils soup (kaalo daal) along with a salad. The authentic taste of subtly spiced stew of chicken, perfectly cooked mustard greens with a hint of cumin seeds, tempered black lentil soup with a beautiful aroma of ginger, freshly ground tomato pickle with a hint of Szechwan pepper and tangy pickled fermented greens all served their purpose as a part of the ‘Thaali’. Apart from the choice of this ‘Rice Thaali’, for another authentic Thakali experience, one can always opt for a ‘Buck Wheat Dhedo Thali’. Therefore missing out on a‘Thaali’ would mean you are missing out on the full Thakali experience.
